The Truth About REE


Resting energy expenditure (REE) refers to the number of calories your body burns while at rest, in order to maintain homeostasis. It’s a variable system that changes to accommodate your level of activity – meaning those who are more active enjoy a higher metabolic rate. No matter how much you exercise, REE represents the majority (60-70%!) of your total energy output. And starting at age 20, your REE declines at a rate of about 2% per decade.


Why does REE decrease? Declining thyroid function, loss of lean muscle mass, reduced metabolic activity in lean tissue, and the cessation of bone growth and development all cause older people to burn fewer calories at rest than younger people (individual rates vary a lot). The go-to response has been to simply eat less as you age in hopes of reduce the effects of a slowed metabolism. But there’s a major flaw with this approach: studies show that caloric restriction can result in significantly less physical activity (you don’t have the energy to exercise!). Reduced physical activity results in less lean muscle and a slower metabolic rate (if you provide your body fewer calories to function, your is cutting its allocation of energy across your entire system in order to survive the “famine!”). Less fat-burning lean muscle and a slower metabolic rate result in weight gain. Weight gain can lead to more caloric restriction. And the cycle continues to grow, just like the numbers that show on your scale.



The Thermogenic Problem


The search for solutions to increase REE isn’t new. In fact, clinicians and researchers have already discovered several therapeutic agents that have shown impressive results at up-regulating thermogenesis. Unfortunately, many of the most effective treatments have proven to be the least safe. Consider the use of amphetamines that work by stimulating the central nervous system to release hormones like epinephrine and norepinephrine which effectively decrease appetite and raise metabolic rate – but come with a high potential for dependency. In an attempt to avoid negative side effects, people have turned to botanical medicines and plant-derived substances like Green Tea, Psyllium, Kelp, and others. Unfortunately, the science behind these products varies wildly with some reporting safe and efficient results and others reporting very few confirmed claims.


The most promising and well-researched botanically derived metabolism booster is found in chili peppers. The chili pepper compound known as capsaicin is what gives peppers their “hotness” but also has significant positive effects when it comes to shedding body fat: studies show that long-term intake can increase fat oxidation and increase REE (see bibliographical source no. 1).

Dihydrocapsiate: Hot or Not?


What if you could get all of the benefits of the spicy little compound capsaicin without these problems involved? Turns out, you can. 

Looking deeper into the bioactive compounds of chili peppers, a group of Japanese investigators discovered substances produced by certain strains of chili peppers that are structurally similar to capsaicin but luckily different in certain regards. Known as capsinoids, these substances stimulate thermogenesis and lipolysis (increase energy expenditure and fat melting) but are approximately 1,000 times less hot than capsaicin! Additionally, as they pass through the GI tract, capsinoids are hydrolyzed and converted into inactive conjugates that have no threat of causing systemic side effects – no accelerated heart rate, no elevated blood pressure, no problem.



PROGENEX Burn includes an effective amount of the capsinoid known as dihydrocapsiate. Like capsaicin, when dihydrocapsiate enters your mouth, it stimulates certain receptors that trigger a response within your sympathetic nervous system and sets off three principal mechanisms of action:


1)  Up-regulation of UCP-3 (Mitochondrial Uncoupling Protein-3) in muscle cells: this causes ATP production, independent of what’s occurring in the mitochondria and releases the energy as heat. An identical process happens during caloric restriction as a means to economize energy. So, in other words, this action gives you the benefits of caloric restriction without actually reducing calories.


2)  Up-regulation of UCP-1 (Uncoupling Protein-1, aka Thermogenin). This protein is only found in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and is used by your body to generate non-shivering thermogenesis as a means to protect against hypothermia. In other words, larger numbers of calories are converted into heat, meanwhile reducing deposits of white (undesirable) fat.


3)  Hydrolysis of triglycerides into glycerol plus three fatty acids. Essentially, the dihydrocapsiates stimulate the breaking down of fat into a form your body can readily use as sources of energy during exercise while delaying the oxidation of muscle and glycogen. This means, you can hang onto quick energy reserves for when you need them later, significantly enhancing your endurance.

Mice Swimming

(See Figure 1 below.) The study also reported the following:


After 30 minutes swimming, the residual glycogen in the gastrocnemius muscle (located in the calf of the leg) was higher, as was the serum free fatty acid concentration. Further to these, the lactic acid concentration was significantly lower; meaning the mice were able to avoid reaching the lactic acid threshold for a longer period of time.


Mice Running


The same group of researchers continued the study by placing mice on a treadmill for 60 minutes of running. The group who took PROGENEX Burn’s active ingredient showed enhanced fat oxidation and decreased utilization of carbohydrates (See Figure 2 below). Additionally, they “experienced a reduction in anaerobic respiration in favor of aerobic respiration by sparing muscle glycogen stores.” As in the swimming experiment, the group test group also showed a significant reduction in lactic acid accumulation.


On top of more endurance due to the efficient shift in energy utilization, multiple human studies (see bibliographical source no. 4) also show that lactic acid accumulation may significantly reduce when sufficient capsiate is taken.
